Thirty Dollars and a Cut Eye Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bruce Trampler -- The best ... : This outstanding book is about the Peltz era of boxing promotion in the 1970s and '80s, when being a "Philadelphia fighter" and a product of that city's legendary gym wars was the ultimate term of fistic respect. It meant that you were probably a left hooker, and stacked up against any fighter, anywhere in the world --- win, lose or draw. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Chris -- Invaluable : J. Russell Peltz has been in the boxing biz for slightly more than 50 years and remains one of the most honorable and respected people in the industry. He’s probably the last great promoter who was cut from the old school cloth. In his long-waited book - which is one of the most important boxing books ever written in my estimation - there are so many fascinating stories, told in his own unique matter of fact style. Philadelphia is one of the premier world boxing cities and Peltz was Mr. Philadelphia as far as the sport goes for most of those 50 years, as one of the most astute historians in the game, it is invaluable that he actually put his memories into words and shared these stories. Research is great (and I am a researcher), but to have these stories told by not just someone who was there, but the main man himself is simply a treat. This is a mandatory purchase for anyone who calls themself a fight fan as far as I’m concerned. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Reader -- An important addition to the sports-writing canon : Longtime fight promoter, historian, collector and mensch J Russell Peltz has written one of the great books about the fight game from the perspective of one who was there during the last Golden Age. Peltz worked with just about every important (and many relatively unimportant) fighter, manager, trainer, booking agent and matchmaker in and around Philadelphia when the City of Brotherly Love was among the two or three most important fight towns in the world. A partial list of the fighters he promoted: Bennie Briscoe, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Jerry Martin, Marvin Johnson, Jeff Chandler, Willie "The Worm" Monroe, Bobby "Boogaloo" Watts, Eugene "Cyclone" Hart, Mike Rossman, Tyrone Everett, the list goes on and on and on. And Peltz holds nothing back while recalling the good, bad and ugly of the Philadelphia fight game. He is self-deprecating, generous in praise of those who earned it and he is a better writer than a boxing promoter ought to be. If it's in this book, it happened. If you know how special this era was, you should get this book to relive it. If you don't know how special it was, you should get this book to learn about it. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bruce G. Kielty -- Excellent! : I have read hundreds of boxing-related books and Russell Peltz's autobiography is worth every penny. He smartly covers his entire 50 year career as a leading promoter with a prose that never bogs down. The stories are fresh and interesting, unlike many of the boxing books that rehash the careers of Ali or Tyson ad nauseum. It is over 400 pages long but you will have difficulty putting it down. You will find little or no braggadocio from Peltz, which is truly refreshing. He is often painfully candid. I recommend Thirty Dollars and a Cut Eye without reservation. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- I wish I had made it to the Blue Horizon : I am a boxing fan, so how could I not love Thirty Dollars and a Cut Eye . Talking about boxing in the 70's and the fights at the Blue Horizon would bring joy to any true fight fans. Thanks for taking the time to do so Russell. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from kim b. -- Real and raw. : Just the facts with all the irony and humor in a world of sports and sportsmanship. These tales are filled with passion and pain. An excellent read for boxing fans and for those who appreciate a half century trek through life. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from thomas rosenfield -- Couldn’t put it down : One of the most revealing books on the business of boxing you'll ever read. More than just about the fights. This book takes you behind the scenes with the best Philly fighters and fights of the last 50 years. A promoter actually discusses finances, negotiations and his interaction with fighters like Bennie Briscoe, George Benton, Tyrone Everett, Saad Muhammad, Marvin Johnson, Arturo Gatti and Kassim Ouma, among many others. Who was behind the fixed decision in the Everett vs. Alfredo Escalera fight in 1976. You find out what it was like to be, basically, a 22-year-old kid who went from the serene suburbs of Philadelphia to the inner city, into the famous Philly gyms, running fight cards at the Spectrum and the Blue Horizon. I had trouble putting it down. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2021 )
